Johnson County Fairgrounds Groundskeeper Job Description

Job Summary

The Johnson County Fair Board is seeking motivated individual to be responsible for general maintenance and upkeep of the fairgrounds. Groundskeeper reports directly to the Buildings Superintendent.  This is a hands-on position that will require work on some weekends and holidays as needed. Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must have professional positive attitude with good communication skills. Employee is expected to deal effectively and courteously with the public. 

 

Compensation for this position will include an annual salary (range $30-35K) as well as:

  • Residence on fairgrounds (housing and utilities included)

  • Paid commission based on the number of boat/RV storage spaces rented at $10 per unit per year

  • Travel expenses at a rate equal to the standard IRS mileage rate

  • Reimbursement for job-related expenses

  • Cellphone reimbursement

  • Two weeks of paid time off annually, so long as no part of those two weeks occurs during the month of July

  • Be eligible for an annual bonus contingent upon fair revenue and an individual performance review during the August Executive Fair Board meeting following the July fair

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Maintain all equipment and buildings

  • Maintain grounds including mowing, spraying weeds as needed, picking up trash

  • Monitoring campgrounds annually (excluding fair week) including reservations and collection of camp fees at full price, unless approved by fair board

  • Cleaning restrooms weekly, daily, or more frequently during project check-in and fair weeks

  • Cleaning facilities prior to any rental period and stocking/cleaning restrooms for rental periods lasting more than one day

  • Winterizing/preparing facilities and working with water company to perform needed tasks

  • Snow removal as needed

  • Checking voicemail in Fair Office and returning all calls for groundskeeper (general line and RV/Boat storage) within 24 hours

  • Coordinating rental of buildings with calendar and collecting rental fees

  • An additional list of projects deemed critical to the upkeep and maintenance of fairgrounds may also be provided from time to time

 

Job Skills & Qualifications:

  • English language proficiency

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Must have a valid driver’s license

  • Ability to work independently

  • Able to communicate effectively with fair board and visitors to the facility

  • Experience operating tractor, mower, skid loader preferred

  • Familiarity with at least one of the following preferred: carpentry, plumbing, HVAC or similar

  • Applicants will be required to submit to a criminal background check as well as an annual physical and drug test.
